Yes, this is a reference to @Oneye’s post: Do’s and Don’ts for BUILDING... but now it’s Do’s and Don’ts for MODDING! Whatcha gonna do about it? XD

Pics comming soon.

DO use weapon arc GUIs
Just because weapon arcs are optional, doesn’t make ‘em useless.

DO test everything
Wether it be the tiniest bugfix, or an entirely new addition, always test every aspect of your mod before even thinking about making a zip file!

DO get Notepad ++
To all modders using Windows Notepad, I pity you.

(Sublime works too)

DO get Paint.net
If you’re using MS paint... just... what the heck?

(GIMP works too... I guess...)

DO reuse stock parts and textures
Retexturing stock parts will make your life easier and your parts nicer!

(on that same note: don’t just copy and paste stock textures, it looks very cheap)

DO use .zip files @Canoneer
Because nobody can manually install s###

(.rar does not count as a zip file!)

DO use the built-in mod packager @Walt
(Right-click on mod -> Create Mod Package) It's a fool-proof way of making sure you create a .zip that the game can auto-install.

(Walt worked hard on the game! Might as well as use what it provides!)

DO read and research first, ask later @Lafiel
Please read all the pinned posts in the mod sections, the guides, the wiki articles and example mods first.

(Guides and wiki are of lacking, but that's your problem!)

DO get the right sprite maker for yourself @Namek
Don't get the one people shove on you, but look into all the spritemakers, and chooce what fits you best, by that you get the best experience and get your own original style better!

DO reference vanilla game files instead of copying them if you are reusing assets. @Bubbet
You've got no idea how many times I see people reupload the same sprites and the worst one: shield.shader from the vanilla game so there's 40 versions of the same file amongst mods.

(use ./ in front of files to reference the Cosmoteer executable’s folder)

DON'T steal other peoples work @Namek
Don't steal the sprites from other peoples work, it makes you less original and eventually people will notice, and you get a warning from a moderator.

(I know all about that)

DON’T make the blueprint sprite the same as the icon sprite
ZergRush, I’m talking to you!

DON’T just recolor stock parts
It’s not a “new part” if it’s just a blue small laser. If you’re gonna do that, please... add something new to it at least

DON’T make joke mods
People will demand that you update it, no matter how dead it is.

(PS: coconut mod is dead. Stahp pls)

DON'T ask others to make your sprites
Trust me, it's harder to find a willing good spriter than it is to find a pin in a needle factory.

(This isn't to say it's a bad idea to ask a spriter to do your dirty work, it's just very hard to find one)

DON’T copy and paste in-game assets into your mods

If you have any more bad modding habits, please share them

jbox1 changed the title to Do’s, and Don’ts for MODDING!.

    DO convert to .zip file
Because nobody can manually install for shi*

READ and RESEARCH first ask later

Please read all the pinned posts in the mod sections, the guides, the wiki articles and example mods first.

jbox1 If you dint know how to Sprite, ask someone who knows how to. And let him help you🤗

Stormi_chan I hate to say this, but it is harder to find a willing spriter than it is to find a pin in a needle factory, trust me. This is why many modders are left to their own capabilities to make their own sprites.

jbox1 You already forgot Stormi_chan is a willing spriter?
Also, you copied mine wrongly. There is a "for".

Canoneer I know that, but he is probably the only spriter at the moment, and there are many more modders than spriters in the community, making it much harder to find a spriter, even if ThorS is willing.

    jbox1

Okay! I like to make an objection on DO get Paint.net, read the one below.

Do get the right sprite maker for yourself

I like to make an objection on DON'T make joke mods, read the one below.

    DO make mods you like
Make the mods you like to make! Even if they are funny and useless, don't make mods that are focussed on purely downloads, and you don't like it yourself!

    More coming soon!

I'm gonna go with, do reference vanilla game files instead of copying them if you are reusing assets. You've got no idea how many times I see people reupload the same sprites and the worst one: shield.shader from the vanilla game so there's 40 versions of the same file amongst mods.

    jbox1 DO use .zip files

DO use the built-in mod packager. (Right-click on mod -> Create Mod Package) It's a fool-proof way of making sure you create a .zip that the game can auto-install.

DON’T constantly hassle YouTubers to use your mods.
It will just make them hate you.

    jbox1 So true

DO get other people to test your mod and take a look at your sprites. There may be something in it that missed.

jbox1 Do you speak of experience?... Haha!

Namek I speak for someone elses experiences.

jbox1 Oehhh! Who! Who is being hated by a youtuber? xD

jbox1 wait, there was a game going on behind my back? 😐

Walt jbox1 Do check if someone made a similar mod before.
Nobody wants to be falsely accused.
(Unless you do. Then I'm judging you.)
Do use proper spelling and grammar.
