I am basing my views on what i basically want the future to be like, which is technology similar to the expanse, which i am basing my entire concept on. You seem to trying to debunk my idea on how warships will be designed. With technology like the expanse, ships would turn towards somewhere, accelerate and then flip around half-way there and start to decelerate. Because of the power and efficiency of the engines used in the expanse, that design is feasible, but with modern day technology it is not. About just having small thrusts, if you had a large cylindrical ship, you would still need some thrust to get it spinning,, with drag or not. Unless you have magical friction-less surfaces, you still to occasionally speed it up again to keep gravity. Spin gravity at the current time is our best but only option. I was mostly thinking about warships, and i see having spinning sections would be harder to manage in a battle.

Im not trying to debunk anything, im more so talking about your idea on a motive of artificial gravity, i already said that i doubt that space warfare will happen. As for frition when rotating a ship, im talking about rotating the entire ship, and even if you were only rotating certain parts repairs in space is possible and wouldn't be a big issue, we repair things in space all the time and would just get better with it in time. as for war ships, you can easily just use fast moving drones to do your bidding, they would work just like missiles and wouldn't require any crew exept for launching, but thats if your out of the orbit of a planet, either way like i said space warfare is pointless as you can easily stop a fleet before they get close. (also reply to my posts so i can get a notification lol)

also its not hard to doge a ship trying to joust with you, all you have to do is rotate yourself away from the on comming ship and get moving, space battles would be in large distances, plus if your really annoyed with a ship constanylt getting into ramming distance jut fire a net of dust at a high rate of speed and go on with your day
Jared On a ship, if you spin the whole thing all equipment would be constantly spinning, including weapons, unless you had very advanced fire control systems, I doubt it will b easy to aim point defence and such while spinning. Unless you had an extremely massive and dense field of dust, it would probably disipate and spread out. Unless it Is shot at unbelievable speed, it would be dodged if a ship is agile enough. Yes it could be used at close range at such, but if jousting a the high speeds the dust could travel too slow to hit. Anyway, how do you fire this dust? I guess you could use some sort of big scattergun, but it would have to be big to fire a big cloud, which would be extremely hard. Jousting would probably still be massive distances apart, getting into ramming distance would be literally impossible. Laser weapons could probably ware down the clouds enough to make them less harmful if they are on a unavoidable collision course.
What about other ship designs, such as Spheres?
And what about the short cylinders?
RedAndCosmoteer spheres have less room and dosent really matter the size of the cylinder
Jared So we should just say Cylinder then.
And, what about ships from Children of a Dead Earth?
(if you even have that game)
I have one
its called twin hooks
MrDerpaDerpy No offence but i do not thing that is necessarily that realistic
why
MrDerpaDerpy I don't think a space-faring civilisation would build a ship of it's shape, It is just not practical as a ship. Unless it is spun or something i am not sure.
TotallyNormalPerson well it can be used as a space hook if you have multiple orbital rings

Jared Good point

Introducing the Spinstar, A mobile installation with it's purpose being to be able to support artificial gravity by spinning it's entire super-structure, for long duration voyages. As well as that, It has a very high sub-luminal speeds due to it's massive and efficient plasma based engines. For defence it has four light pulse laser blaster arrays, with advanced fire-control systems on board to allow for accurate firing while spinning. The ship has basic FTL capabilities, and can jump short distances at low fuel expense.
(It is not a warship, but a station or colony ship)
MrDerpaDerpy Unless some rich guy wanted to build a cool looking spaceship, it would only be good as a mobile installation as said by TotallyNormalPerson.
