the_guy545 I can not help you with that because it is almost completely modded. Sorry.
Dos, and Don'ts For BUILDING! (out of date)
- Edited
Oneye Oh. Ok. It's fine.
the_guy545 I can only think of one "Do": Build and use ships your computer can actually handle. It once took me several hours (don´t remember exactly, but it was quite some time) to build a ship that just made my game crash. That absolutely wasn`t worth it. My computer is pretty bad (guess u could use the term "total garbage") and I instantly knew your ship would rather kill my game than my ships.... Got no useful tips regarding this one for that reason.
PS: Sry, can`t stop writing!
Oneye
Do's: -move your shields outwards to prevent rockets from exploding near your ships hull. (This DOESN'T replace point defense!)
-build and use ships your computer can actually handle.
-check the explosion range of reactors (and other explosive parts) while building a ship in creative mode. ("Self destruct" has proven quite useful in that regard.)
Don'ts: -use too many shields at a single spot.
-rely solely on shields. Taking them down is way easier than you may expect.
(-be an asshole. This one should be self-explanatory.)
CursedPh4nt0m My computer is a lot better than yours apparently, as my computer can handle about 5-8 of these, and perhaps 10-15 of these if I go to 1/20th speed using the Tweakscale mod.
the_guy545 So that's how the mod is called. Was wondering all the time how you could possibly use 1/20th speed... Thx

CursedPh4nt0m there are a few mods that change the time speed, for example speedset mod
Don't forget to put at least one weapon or you will get killed without a fight

Good design for combat ships is always fully oriented on performance, every credit spend on decoration will make difference between death crew and living crew
Ask yourself, will you serve on very good looking ship, in case that it is obvious suicide?
EDIT: that ugly hole inside ships are from my point of view strange and i do not like them too.

Catelyn If you don't like them you don't have to use them, but do note that this is a guide for combat ships. Plus, I could not ever make a guide for designing "good looking ships" because everyone has their own preference. for example, I think some of my newer painted walls look nice, but someone else might not even look at the paint and just yell at me for it being a wall.
You can't please everyone, I think I have found a good balance between looks and usability, but many others don't think so. Cosmoteer was built to be a combat game, not a game focused on looks. But the fact that we can make our ships look nice is a great gift, and I am not scolding anyone who does.
I also don't like the hole, but I didn't have anything to fill the space with. Plus the thrusters on the back of that thing are already exposed enough, that is why I put the armor there.
I have updated the guide and added a few more tips.
Phew! Updated it again!
So for some reason I've seen a lot of ships like this, don't put more than three missile launchers right next to each other. they only have doors on the sides, so once you fire your initial volley, if you have a long row of missile launchers, it will take forever for them to reload.
