Theory:

Apparently the planet is like a mother ship form, possibly it is of orders to others, if this is true, if we manage to finish with their "Planet", we may end up with them.

This "Race" could have a collective mind, possibly the "mother ship" controls them to bring food, this would explain why the ships do not attack, just drag to the portal to the ships.
