So you're new to the community? Welcome! I hope you have an awesome time in the community. First thing we should look into is making sure you join the Discord community, there is lots of great ship, modding community and support.
I'm going to split this in two parts Bounty Hunter & Creative each will give you a run-down and some neat little tricks. If you have anything else you'd like to add or any questions feel free to post below.
Bounty Hunter
Bounty hunter is a very fun gamemode to play and takes a bit of strategy which always spices things up. As you spawn in you'll find yourself inside a little ship. The ships name is Model-1.

There is three lasers at the front, get a shield under the defense section and place it where the armour and laser is. Now move the reactor to the open space where the lasers are. Move the FTL in the old reactor postion and add lasers at the back where it is guarded by metal.
This is how it should look. Now you can go and attack enemies by right clicking and waiting for you to arrive. After you get into the bubble you can now see the enemy ship. You want to pause the game (hit spacebar) and then you want to right click certain parts (This will target them with your weapons). Mostly if it's a small ship you want to disable the lasers and after all weapons are disabled you want to target the reactor.
Reactors are highly explosive so this is why you should target them as well as thats how you gain the money.
HOW DO I BECOME RICH IN BOUNTY HUNTER?!
Best way to get one very nice fancy ship is to start taking and finishing all the amateur levels or getting enough to buy a decent ship where you can go to the next level. The next level is proffesional level in which you'd need to tackle make sure you have a good fleet.
What ship should I get?
I personally like this brilliant ship for it's price. It's really good in bounty hunter and after you've got a few you'll be destroying everybody just don't get carried away.
This ship is not mine and I take no credit for it.
Mass: 617.5 tonnes
Crew: 108 souls
Value: 499400
Which is a brilliant price for such a great ship and should not be too hard to get this ship in bounty. If you're wondering how to install ships just go over to here there is a whole tutorial on how to install ships.
Attacking ships
When you're attacking ships make sure that once you've selected the area you'd like to target that you shift click and make it so your ship moves or faces a certain way. Sometimes it helps for your ship to be strafing. Other times not so much as if the ship is constantly turning the ship will want to allign it self with the selected point stead of attacking so it's going to that point as the ship constantly turns, not turning out so great for you. (No pun intended).
I need bigger and better ships!!!
Feel free to go join the discord and there is a whole dedicated ship channels and the community is friendly and always sending cool ships over there. Make sure to test them in creative. (More about that in part two)

Don't worry, don't cry for Mods are here. There is lots of great Mods you can get for the game that will make your experience very fun and add a few little twists click here https://forum.cosmoteer.net/d/333-how-to-install-and-use-mod-packages/9 to see how to install mods and https://forum.cosmoteer.net/t/mods for lots of Mods. Some of these Mods can be very, very, very overpowered and are no match for Bounty ships. So you can go into creative and use others ships. (More in part two)

Creative
Creative is an awesome gamemode. Where all those ships you wanted to build but you were confined by a budget no longer exists. You can battle ships as well to the death and cause huge battles and destruction. The dream come true.
How do I access creative?
You can do this by doing to the menu where you choose Bounty hunter mode but before you click on Bounty hunter there should be an option for creative.
If you want to get lots of money in bounty hunter there is a installed money mod in which you can enable. (Go to the main menu, then Mod section and it should be called "Bounty Hunter: 1,000,000,000" in which you just click the red icon and it should go green. Now all you need to do is restart your game and enter bounty hunter mode and the money should be there!)
How do I create ships?
In the top left corner left click "New Ship" and then choose "Terran",
How do I save a ship?
Select your ship. (It should show in the bottom left corner). Inside the box there should be 3 lines, click that. Then click "Save Ship Design" name your ship whatever you want and now it's saved.
How do I spawn a ship?
You're going to want to click "Ship library" and all your ships should show up. You can select "built-in-ships" or "my ships" just click the ship you want and drag it on screen and click. If you want to change the diretion it faces hold down left click once you place it and move your mouse.
How do I vs ships?
Select the ships you want. Now click on the three lines click A.I, choose normal. Then click Allegiance and you can make it a Barbarian and they'll fight everyone or you can select teams for the selected ships you have. They should start locking onto each other and the blood shed shall start.
