Q: What are susuwatari? Where do they come from?
They are believed to be charcoal soot related to burning coals. Likes to flock at dark corners of ceilings, staircases, attic, kitchen, etc, they are commonly found in households that burn coals for heating and cooking. It seem only children can spot them. According to folklore, they tend to wander from house to house. Thus the name, "susuwatari" or wandering soot. In one of Mr Miyazaki's worlds, susuwatari work as cheap labor at the boiler room of a bath house for immortal beings.
