Walt Can you give an example of a situation where you would want mouse follow off? (Personally I find DC mode nearly unplayable without it on, but defaulted it to off so as not to confuse new players with unexpected camera movement.)
I have mouse follow exclusively off right now, I like to decouple ship rotation and where weapons point, it's especially important with slow rotation weapons like prisms or cannons. Also after piloting orbiter ships manually for a while it feels fairly natural without mouse follow on (just adds unnecessary layer to the controls, although mouse follow is still quite nice)
Walt That's a good point. There are pros and cons on both sides.
Most of your points are about consistency between wasd and arrow keys, here I think that a vast majority of players use WASD anyway (since most other control keys are on the left side of keyboard anyways)
Abiyt A/D being more important with mouse follow mode: I think Q and E are still very comfortable to use, and I still use the rotate keys while in mouse follow mode. While controlling camera in game I use Q and E constantly, while almost never touching W/A/S/D.
That said I think your points are valid too and it can go both ways, so your call (when is it not your call though? 😛).
Also on the note of decoupling weapon rotation and mouse, perhaps add a button that you can hold that temporarily decouples where you point with your mouse and where weapons point.
Aaaand feature request: have a mode where weapons have fire at will in manual mode, so for example they would fire when you point your weapons at the enemy, not when you left click.
