Commodore Exis listened to the transmission in confusion. Grand Admiral Rommel of the German Space Regime? The Stellar Assembly? They were dissolved a long time ago. The siege is lost? That wasn't how history played out.
"Probability of this being a past event?"
A younger voice responded to Exis, as if a young Illateri was speaking to him but the voice was more... digitized.
"Null, sir. If I recall my galactic history correctly, then both sieges of the Star Forge - the Great Ring included, were a draw for the Stellar Assembly. I do not remember a siege being broken."
That was Stick, a dumb AI - below the human level, but it did it's job.
"Analysis of other probabilities based on signatures from the rift?"
"Analyzing... Complete, most probable being an alternate universe."
"This changes everything. Contact HIGHCOM. Oh, also, put up a space-time shield in between us and them."
A barrier of pure space-time appeared - high gravitational signatures were checked, and when the drives were charged, the fleet warped away to the next sector, still being able to observe and hear transmissions, but they were unable to do anything about the fleet - their firepower was simply too great.
