The scans of the system reveal very little of interest in terms of other planets, really this "Earth" is the only thing of interest everywhere other than perhaps the moon.
In orbit of Earth, is a station similar in size to the old 21st century ISS, but a little larger in scale, a small ship sits docked to it, an unidentified vessel seemingly designed shortly before the planet fell.
The station has no lifesigns, and its life support systems have failed entirely, resulting in a freezing atmosphere inside. Its solar panels have many small holes from failing to avoid micro debris impacts and larger holes elsewhere.
The moon, amazingly, has some kind of base.
Only small, and clearly in its beginning setup phase, three small habitat modules and a few auxiliary modules form it up.
One large step for man, and one tiny shuffle for any other faction.
Sadly, it seems it is empty, but thankfully on purpose this time, seemingly having never seen human crew yet.
Earth though, is a different story.
Earth, once a bustling hub for humanity and a home for billions, is now clouded in a dense grey fog.
The clouds of fog block out any accurate sensor readings, and would make landing anything larger than a shuttle a task for an Inhumanly quick thinker, and no less.
The clouds seem to act like a normal cloud, visible strikes of lightning scatter across the planet's surface.
The only sensor readings anything can get, is the following:
INITIAL READINGS:
Local "Sentient" Life signs Excluding Extra-terrestrials: 1
Local Weather systems: Extremely dangerous
Local transmissions: 1 confirmed, 20000+ unknown
Local Global average temperature: 14.5°C/58.1°F
Local Atmosphere: mainly nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and carbon dioxide. Mass amounts of unknown gas detected.

The clouds makeup is confirmed to NOT be anything instantly deadly such as grey goo or nanites.
Down below lights, such as from a city, light the foggy sky up, visually confirming that the gas has not eaten anything structural...

The satellite reveals the following data:
SATELLITE LOG:
Error, control centre contact lost.
Their ongoing scans reveal the following:

The facility seems to be lit up below them, but as they descend the lights get darker and darker as they enter the fog and it gets more and more dense.
Soon, the lights are gone, and they are navigating from sensor readings and memory alone down to the surface...
The transmissions seem to... just stop, as soon they approach the surface...
The only one that remains is the distress signal...
