Great tactic! But it doesn't seem like you considered what happens when a star gets hit by something going that fast. Oops....

The debris impacts the star at approximately .77 c. The corona melts most of the debris to slag but does nothing to actually slow it down as the projectiles hit the photosphere, sending shockwaves across the surface of the star and flinging several planet's worth of plasma out into space. The equivalent of an absolutely massive solar flare, the plasma brushes across the ringworld, vaporizing metal into clouds of vapor...

Any sort of ancient powerful and smart enough to build a ring world must have considered that some guy may have attacked the ring world, and an investment this big needs to be protected.)
