"So you wanted to hear about how we got here? Well, it's a rather short story."
He begins with: "So! Scientists in our dwarf galaxy near yours have developed a faster than light drive system. It required a special substance to run, a supercomputer, and a lot of energy. We had the technology to build fusion reactors and fusion drives for a while now, but we also had the ability to manipulate space and time to our will, and we created fields of gravity." He then pointed at the general direction of their ship,
"See our ship? Remember when our landing was rapidly decelerated with tens of thousands of gees of acceleration before we landed? That is our gravity drive. We also developed pulsed laser technologies."
He then paused for a short second, then continued. "Now HIGHCOM wanted to test all of these systems, and they decided to install them on two of our voidships, and we will not tell what's so special about them."
"However, our supercomputer is a prototype too, because the FTL drive also required immense amounts of calculations that no artificial intelligence in our galaxy had achieved before. And our supercomputer was faulty. Instead of emerging where we were supposed to be, we were launched thousands of light years from our home, and we can't get back because there are multiple galaxies around this one, so we can't identify which is our home."
He stopped.
"In simple terms: Voidship gets outfitted with prototype technology, and voidship fails and slingshots us far from home."
