More parts of the Eridani fleet have arrived through the now finished warpgate. Everyone seems nervous. The local CO has ordered a complete lockdown of the sector.

Suddenly four massive objects are registered travelling at extremely high speeds, as they impact the warpgate, it becomes clear that it were cannon shots, massive explosive 5 ton cannon shots travelling at insane speeds...
(also, why were you directly hostile?)

Signals seem to be able to be received. An automated message can be heard playing. "We are the Eridani. We have claimed this sector and see any attempt to enter Sector 0257-0461 as an act of hostility."

All shots hit the warpgate's shield, temporarily draining all energy and disabling it instead immediately destroying it. Due to the projectiles hitting the shield the Outpost could calculate the enemies position rather quickly and sent out a few dozen fighter squadrons and most of the Eridani's fleet. Everyone is on high alert, fearing the giant cannons could hit them next.

"I want that warpgate up ASAP, we need reinforcements!"

When they get to the triangulated positions, they find nothing... but a short spurt off there seems to glow something, it may be a decoy, it could be a bomb, but it could also be the cannons you are searching for...

Three unmanned, remote controlled drones are released and investigate the glow, while the fleet stays at a, what they deem safe, distance.

it was a bomb.

the fleet hears, well nothing, because of space, but they see a faint explosion in the distance... The bomb was not too big, probably just a maneuver to gain some time. Then there are messages coming in, more cannon shots have landed, from three different positions according to triangular calculation...

The engineers have managed to get some scanners working again and are trying to scan the area for precise positions. Dozens of unmanned drones have been released in order to search where those shots are coming from. The shields, this time prepared to re-root energy, are still holdin up. The warpgate opens again and more ships are coming through.

The ships find a small beacon, which sends out the same message again and again:
"Thank you for your patience, the experiment is over."

Confused, the Commander orders a handful of squadrons to patrol the outskirts of the sector, while retreating the main fleet back to the outpost which is currently being upgraded to a Citadel. More and more ships are being warped in...

You see several ships with Imperium markings skulking about on the edge of your territory. They seem to be scanning the stars, and not disturbing anything....

Three Fighter Squadrons approach the Imperial Ships, scanning them would reveal their offensive systems being offline. The outpost attempts to establish communications;
"We are the Eridani. We will have to ask you to identify yourself and stop scanning this sector."
They try to keep a neutral, maybe even friendly tone, but the ships can clearly see wrecks of what seem to have been ships.

Spooked, the ships turn and run full burn to a jump point, then vanish.
