Wait, don't judge! I don't mean giant planets or something. Planets would be areas with hitbox encircled by area with higher movement resistance values and some nice particle effects. Planets could be almost atmosphreless or densly coated in atmosphere like Venus. They could have gravity affecting ships being only very close to planet and they would enable player to shoot railguns around the planet without exposing ship to laser fire, and stars, gas and other types of celestial bodies would have ranging properties. Player should be also able to send ships for interplanetary travel without FTL drive, it could be used for managing fleets when game goes to point when you will be able to manage few at a time, there could be higher speed increases if all ships are travelling at interplanetary space/ staying at player's base, travel could be immediate using FTL (which could be scaled up in size, cost and fuel usage to compensate the fact they are not required) or long-term using normal thrusters, you could speed game up up to e.g. 50x to speed up wait for your ships to arrive somewhere. You could order them to patrol interplanetary space in polygon which's corners could be placed on planets where you have your bases and sides could go only between planets of set distance. There would be giant part of "kilometer radar" which would scan giant area with expense of giant amount of power. It would enable you to find about enemy ships travelling through your territory or just approaching it. Reactors would work more like batteries, they would use uranium, it would be used EXTREMELY slowly, you would be able to siege without using supply still, but war campaign would need supply lines to keep on going. You would be able to point mining ray at planet of rocky class. excavation and overall earning rate would be dependent on multiplier specific to planet. Ships would be able to transport uranium using uranium storage which would be extremely explosive and vulnerable. ships could be added into support companies or mining swarms instead of fleets also each group could have single variant; support ship, excavation ship and, they would be able to do their respective jobs: support company-transporting uranium from assigned mining swarms to assigned fleets, mining swarms would excavate from specified planets and fleets would engage in fight/patrol area/charge onto enemy base.
