I noticed there is no universal way of classifying ship by size, so I came up with a classification system based on mass.

Podship-0 100 Tonnes
Fighter-100-300Tonnes
Heavy Fighter-400-600 Tonnes
Corvette-600-800Tonnes
Frigate-800-1200 Tonnes
Cruiser-1200-2500 Tonnes
Dreadnought 2500-10,000 Tonnes
SuperDreadnought-10,000-Infinity Tonnes

please give your opinion feel free to make suggestions.

I mostly classify using size
for example, anything that's less that 10 blocks big is a fighter.
this is 9 wide and 8 long, therefore I class it as a fighter.

this however, is a corvette as it is 24 blocks wide and 26 long

and then this is a cruiser ( I didn't bother counting length and width, this is as big as the normal build grid.)

but really, I feel that basing it on weight could be a good idea. I'm just sticking to my way...

I feel this list is most complete of those in the thread so far, but maybe the weight ranges need adjustment. Smaller ranges for smaller ships, a little wider ranges for larger ones.

A Corvette spanning 300 tons takes make a huge difference when comparing something weighting 699 vs 400. The 699 is almost double the size and weight of the 400. The 699 would be 1.7 times the size of a 400. That's a big difference, especially for smaller ships.

But a 1600 cruiser and a 1999 cruiser only differs by 400, making the 1999 only 1.24 times as big.

Also, I'd add at least Heavy Cruiser to that list.

Kerensky Hmm… what about…

Scout - 99 Tonnes or less

Light Frigate - 600-749 Tonnes
Medium Frigate - 750-899 Tonnes
Heavy Frigate - 900-1099 Tonnes
Light Destroyer - 1100-1299 Tonnes
Medium Destroyer - 1300-1499 Tonnes
Heavy Destroyer - 1500-1699 Tonnes
Light Cruiser - 1700-1899 Tonnes
Medium Cruiser - 1900-2099 Tonnes
Heavy Cruiser - 2100-2299 Tonnes
Battlecruiser - 2300-2499 Tonnes
Battleship - 2500-4999 Tonnes
Dreadnought - 5000-9999 Tonnes

I feel weird.. Am I the only person that uses only a few classes..?
Eclipse - (usually) 1-1099 Tonnes
Umbra - (usually.. sometimes..) 1100- 10000
Nova - (usually) more than 10000
...I use weird scaling..
