I went for a 4 stage ship called Hippy Beetle. You should be able to complete the ship by the end of the first sector.

Would you like to be able to execute an FTL jump right out of the gate? If you do, The Jailor is an interesting deal:

If you're content to have the ability later, consider The Bookburner (top) or The Librarian. You see, 10500 -- plus or minus a few hundred -- credit is a significant amount of money at those range, and the money that should've been spent on the FTL array is now spent on strengthening the ship as well.

This is my starting ship. It's about 80k, so a tad over budget if you want to start with the full package, but that is remedied by converting to the ship design to it without the FTL drive and rear armor and then adding them on after your first kill which should be trivial thanks to your starting electro bolts.

And by the time you finish the location you make your first jump to, you should have enough funds to go right to the v3.

This is the F-01-B, within budget, has FTL + lasers + electrobolts with a well-armoured core. It'll chew through anything at its price.

Anything with shields will die to it, because the energy and space requirements means that shields hamper enemy ships too much without giving them a benefit (due to the electrobolts).

It'll get you through amateur space, and some professional ships, but you'll want to upgrade to the slightly more expensive F-01-X before that:

This'll get you through professionals and some veterans. Of course, the next step is F-02-X.

It has the ability to survive that is required of ships when you get to veteran and elite level. You'll want two for elite, though.
