The "substance" seems too far away from Nekhala to grab, seemingly at least a few kilometers so, quite the impressive fall. As for the railing and the roof, they seem to put just the resistance Nekhala would expect from them, and thus, they disconnected.
He swings the piece of broken metal at the window of an empty passanger car, and it shatters and falls down towards the white void revealed beyond it. Could it be that it's just an image projected by some kind of system into the window? Whatever it is, it seems to have taken away the piece of roof structural metal, as it isn't in Nekhala's hand anymore.

Orion encounters no resistance sliding the door open to reveal a the passanger car. A long corridor down the center with many presumably similar rooms, as indicated by the sliding doors. However, in front of him there seems to be another man (@dodo_bear ). He swings a piece of what seems to be metal at one of the windows, and it shatters, revealing some kind of white void beyond it. However, as his hand came back to resting place after hitting the window, whatever he was holding seemingly dissapeared.
