It's hard to say exactly because it depends on so many different factors like ship size, crew, CPU speed, RAM, etc...

Kind of like the Strategic Mode mod.

Honestly though the issue with that is that it completely broke the Terror. IMO it would make battles feel more grand and significant, and there would rarely be any close quarters combat.

Also, are roof turrets planned? I know you have the capital cannon on the Trello (and perhaps a laser counterpart) which were said to be 4x4 roof turrets, but is there anything else?

Nothing specific, but that doesn't mean I won't, only that I haven't thought about it much.

Jhaerik I guess another way to offset this grinding would be to make the already planned pirate attacks and stuff a bit more frequent when mining -- this way you've got to pay attention.

Hey Walt.
I think what is really dragging large ship battles down performance wise is how the game tracks so many crew. running around. When not in build mode you can still see them all scurrying around. That has got to be taking up some serious GPU/CPU cycles. A couple of nice large ships and the game literally grinds to a halt. And I have to say I've got a pretty powerful machine. Maybe have it so the crew visuals can be turned off.
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that likes large ship battles, but disappointed that the game can't handle it.
I'm also hoping that less mod breaking happens, I'm not a mod maker, but it's got to be rather annoying to mod makers who take the time to create a mod only for it to break in the next release :\
Other than that, can't wait for the full release.

How large and how many? Also, what version of the game agree your playing? The latest couple versions had large performance improvements. My laptop (which is pretty nice but not a gaming laptop) can run a 4v4 Terror battle at about 30fps.

I guarantee you that crew graphics are not the problem. A simple way to confirm is to pause the game. If your fps improves a lot, then it's the game simulation that's the bottleneck, not the graphics.

tarrith Yeah - mod breaking has been the biggest issue actually. Mods take care of almost anything in this game that's not already there - roof turrets, firing distances, etc. But most of them break every so often and fixing them is really a pain,
Other than that, I would probably vouch for fighter/small craft hangars and some variety of control rooms with them being actually required (i.e. so that there would be a reason to go with a large control room vs small one). Other stuff we have mods for, really.

Gets down to about 10fps. But your right, hit the pause and it jacks back up to 60fps.
Hmmm. Maybe i need to lay off the missiles.
But...but...but missiles!
Nope just disabled the missiles, down to 7.9 unpaused.

tarrith Mods will slow your game down more than vanilla, simply because there's a lot more going on. Especially ABH, which uses many experimental features that haven't been fully optimised or don't entirely work too well, meaning that the game has to work harder and therefore your computer won't be able to run larger ships without struggling a bit.

Ultranova Pity, because those two mods are fantastic fun. it would be nice to be able just right click on "parts" and delete them or move manage them into personal catagories.

Major concern with the new paid version continues to be with the extension of dead zones particularly with regards to thrusters/engines and shields. I'd like to buy the new paid version and explore the new single player mode(which I'm really hoping to see carrier features such as fighters that are perhaps custom built) but I'd like to bring in most of my older ships from what would be the free classic version of cosmoteer of which many use internal engine systems and compact shielding. I'd very like if these parts in particular could be considered against the extension of dead zones. Perhaps something along the lines of re-extending the dead zone for Ions or perhaps introducing different classes of engines of which a type for internal usage and another type with longer deadzones but increased speed over the former internal use engines could be considered? Regardless I'll likely try to go ahead and buy the steam version to support the game, just a bit concerned with the transfer of most older ship designs to the new cosmoteer.

Crimson_Reaper I need to balance what's best for the game long-term against keeping old ships compatible. I think that the paid release is probably the best time to introduce breaking changes, and I think these changes need to be made. My current plan is to include a mod which reverts the deadzone changes so that players who want to keep playing with their old ships can do that.
