Hello! The title sounds a bit weird, but a few of you know where I'm coming from with this one. There are some GREAT mods made by some AMAZING members of the community, that do not work on the current version of the game (as in, the mod dev has yet to update it). For obvious reasons, this sucks.

My question is a two-in-one:
1) Is updating a mod for personal use looked down upon? (i.e. making minor edits to make it work as it is, no actual changes to the mod itself)
and 2) How does one go about doing this?

From my experience with modding games such as Starbound, people generally don't mind if you fix a part of their mod to make it work, as long as you either don't distribute it (or just send it to the author if you get the go-ahead, so they can implement the fix), but seeing as how this is a different community, I figured I'd ask before doing something bad or looked down on.

If I do update/fix a few mods, I figure that would be the equivalent of dipping my toes in so that making one from scratch isn't as hard (bonus!).
(Also sorry if this is in the wrong section, figured Mod Dev would be the closest.)

Mods like: Bubbet's Place Holder Mod (the one with the engines and armor and shields and stuff iirc), Redstone's Shields Mod (frickin' love it, but I'm having to re-learn how to use vanilla shields for now lol), and a handful of others that didn't work (like the Ion Beams one, that one looked like it'd be fun with the prisms!)

Well you can redo the mod or use an upgrader no one will look down on you but you need someone's premission to post the modified mod.

dafeeeeeeeeeesh Where does one find a mod upgrader? I apparently used the wrong search terms when looking for such a tool, as I couldn't find one (or wasn't looking hard enough- just as likely.)

Edit: Apparently when searching I didn't use the word "Upgrader"- using it led me here, where I found the 0.14.0 version

check the walt account (creator of cosmoteer) then click discussions scroll down and youll find some the latest is 14.10 i think ever since weekly updates its hard to keep mod upgraders up to date.

SkyeTheTerribleBeastie Since nobody can really verify what you do with the mods for personal use, you're free to do with them whatever you want.

However, if you intend to upload your edited/updated version somewhere you should ask permission, since it's still the original creator's property.

Alpha Alright! Makes sense. If I get them working, I'll throw a comment on the relevant mod thread and ping the owner or something, and hand over the updated version if they want.

Thank you guys for the assistance!

Alright, so I ran the updater on two mods (Bubbet's Placeholder Mod and Redstone's Diffusion Shields), but I'm still getting the same errors as when I had tried to run them prior to updating. I've gotta be missing something- my process is:
Unzip old mod -> use the 0.14.10 mod upgrader on it -> zip the new folder -> install the new zip in Cosmoteer

logs on request in case I'm not actually forgetting a step, otherwise I'd just post it (via Pastebin)

SkyeTheTerribleBeastie In the case of my mod, and almost certainly bubbet's, 0.14.7 broke them before 0.14.10 did, and therefore the upgrader own't fix the issues present from the 0.14.7 update. Also, I am working on a quick port/patch of my mod, so you needn't worry about that.

        CaptainRedstone AWESOME
Really love the shields, to me they make a lot more sense than a bunch of tiny ones.

So does that mean that one would have to run a previous Upgrader (0.14.6 -> 0.14.7 THEN -> 0.14.10), or just re-make them?

        SkyeTheTerribleBeastie Well thank you!

Unfortunately, there wasn't a mod upgrader for the 0.14.7 update. You will have to do that part manually. Theoretically it shouldn't matter if you use the 0.14.10 upgrader first, but I would upgrade it to 0.14.7 first just to be safe.

Ok. Is the it the Changelog or something else I should be looking at for the edits I'd need to make, or is there a guide somewhere that lays it all out?

SkyeTheTerribleBeastie Really the best way to figure it out is by reading the inevitable crash log, and figuring out what went wrong. 90% of the time it is a simple copy-paste sort of fix

Edit: BTW the only thing wrong with 0.14.7 is UIStats, which can simply be removed, or if you want to put in the small amount of effort, basically copy-paste a UIStats branch from the data files, and edit the values
