FLANKERS
Now, let me take bluurgh's Cerberus overhaul here. Thank you, bluurgh.
Now. There are explosive charges on the two splitting arms, creating two other combat vessels if detonated.
Attacking head-on could work for any ship, but not without taking any considerable damage if they attack with one strong force. Here's where the explosive charges come in - the main ship detaches the splitter ships connected to it on the side. The main ship attacks head on, placing massive pressure on the enemy's offensive and defensive weapons, including missiles. This strategy could work extremely well in certain conditions.
Here's Northerner's Sinistar, thank you for the amazing GiF design.

Take note, the shields on the side of the ship are weaker than on the front.
Now, you can either attack it head on with a ship that can't really maneuver like the Sinistar, which can result in a defeat for you,

OR
You can use the two splitter ships to flank either side or both at once while the missiles are focused on the main ship, which will either force the enemy to split their firepower or force them to focus on one force while the others are ignored, which could lead to catastrophic consequences for your opponent.

I'm not sure about the effectiveness, but this is how I understand flanker ships. I don't expect them to be very good, but there ARE in fact situations where they work.
Refer to Namek for more, or if you'd like, ask the professionals. I'm not an expert.
