lissen up nuubs, i neds to tells ya'll how 2 rite gud cuz i see lotsa not gud riting here.
The Forumverse is a massive and diverse place, a salad of ideas. There's only one issue, many people don't really understand how to write lore and such. So I've taken time to develop this guide such that people will learn how to make more developed lore and to help with writing mistakes I see crop up a lot. This doesn't cover absolutely everything because as this quote will tell you...
"A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools."
As such, take what I say here as a suggestion.
-History-
"In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
A good faction is one with a history that matters. There are so many factions without even a timeline, I can see why some would want to avoid the hassle of developing a detailed history, but it's not that difficult. All you would need to do is outline the major events that defined your faction's history, then fill in the rest as you go along.
-Good Ship Design-
"The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't."
Ideally, your ship design should reflect your faction's mindset and history. If your faction is very militaristic, then opt for less pretty ships, instead go for more blunt tools of warfare. A good tip for painting is to try and blend the color of your weapons (only applies to roof turrets) with the paint, makes the ship overall look nicer.
-Controlled Space-
"Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mindbogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space."
I see so many factions who control way more space than is really necessary or even logical for their supposed size, likewise they seem to have absolutely tiny navies for their space. For scale, the nearby 50 lightyears around Sol (our solar system) contains 133 stars. Now reflect on the fact that some factions control thousands of lightyears.
-Technology-
"Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-two million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea."
I see that many factions seem to gloss over tech, I don't blame them, developing ideas for tech and such is boring. So I'll just make the quick argument that you should probably list the general specifics of any unique techs that your faction possesses. Makes life so much easier for everyone involved.
-Lies-
"...they discovered only a small asteroid inhabited by a solitary old man who claimed repeatedly that nothing was true, though he was later discovered to be lying."
Put simply, no faction should tell the exact truth if it's harmful to themselves. If you've got a character in a meeting with another faction's ambassador, both of you are likely to lie so as to make your repsective factions appear better than they actually are. This actually extends into a larger psychological factor in which your faction should make itself out to be far better than it actually is. The Hegemony does exactly this, making careful use of their ships to make their navy appear much larger and freer than it truly is.
