A point I find very weird in Cosmoteer is the way the weapon ranges are managed.
The weapons have a strict weapons range which is also quite small. There is no fire before that.
I have the feeling that the game would be very nice if the range would be greater but with some disadvantages at long range. This would open the game to new tactics and management choice during combat of the moment to open fire (with a button on the interface)
When starting fire you usually have a period of time of massive firepower then the rate of fire diminish because ammmo or power in the weapons have been used. (This is in particular true of the missile even with a carefull design). Thus you could choose to open fire at long range with the possibility of wasting your salvoes or at shorter range to maximize the effect of the dense opening fire. This would also mean that a big wall ship could be shot at long range without fears of missing it while small ships should be engaged at shorter range.
The cannon are partly already oriented in this way as they have low accuracy and speed projectile, meaning that at long range, manoeuvers can be done to avoid fire. Thus their range could be increased. The projectile could also be slowed after a certain time (not very realistic in space though).
The range of the laser could be increased but the damage should be diminished with the range. (whic is realistic as the laser would loose coherence with the distance). The same could be done for the ion beam which would at the same time give an advantage to its use at close quarter instead of circling at a distance.
After a certain distance, the missile should continue in straight line having expanded their propulsion before exploding at a max distance.
