Well, assuming you need to water your crew, I can imagine them feeding themselves through photosynthesis. That said, I think this is not the kind of game where you want to get down to that level of simulation. It would kill smaller designs even more than they already are.

It would indeed kill small designs, but you can make it so they dont REALLY need it, but if you build something that gives them food in your ships , so that it make them more "Happy" and then they are faster?

Not except in extreme cases. (Like they are literally about to die if they don't eat.)

Triop I really like the idea of stations providing a lot of the stuff, maybe even major ship refitting; you should definitely have to be at a station to buy/sell new ships.

This is kind of what I have in mind. My idea is that crew would have certain needs (food, sleep, entertainment). Docking at a station could fulfill those needs, or you could also build those amenities into your own ship which would reduce the frequency with which you need to return to port. Same reason modern aircraft carriers have things like Starbucks, barber shops, and gyms. You could even build your own "resort ship" that stays nearby but out of battle that your crew can return to.

I'm not a fan of small ship designs, so I totally support if the developers add hunger/thirst/tiredness into the game.

heck, for small ship designs devs could just add a small food printer and water recycler, which prevents crew from starving to death or dying from thirst. (but the crew would be unhappy or whatever)

but for larger ship designs having a kitchen and aquaponics would be totally badass.

there's already this game called Diluvion.

if that's the only thing this game is gonna get (ie : ganking enemy ships and collecting loot)

then we already got games like Diluvion, escape velocity nova, and so many other games like that, where players are only expected to keep looting stuff.

but there is no game yet (that i know of) that has fully customized ships + rimworld survival. (at least no game who actually got it right and made it awesome)

I think that this could be in the game but I feel you should make a mod for food and water possible and then make a mod for it just because I personally think that food and water would make the game harder and I would rather not want to play with it so i'd have to play in earlier versions while everyone is playing the new versions. I do like the idea of the resort ship I just think it should be in a mod instead of the game.
