ThatFurryChick Your premise is based around late bounty hunter "When fuel becomes more scarce". Increasing efficiency to get more jumps out of the FTL fuel you loot IS taking steps towards a self sufficient fleet at the very least.
I think a ship that costs 400+ fuel at 90-100% would very likely be a monster in size. I think it makes sense that it would cost a lot to move, think of the difference in fuel it costs to move a heavy combine truck vs a hatchback.
At that point in the game, credits are not an issue and you would normally have an abundance with not a lot to spend it on besides adding more ships to your fleet, where any one of your existing ships can already solo the game. It makes sense to me that you would need to spend credits to get more fuel to make your monster ships move at that stage in the game, as it gives meaning to both currencies.
If anything is gonna change in this department, i reckon this:
1. Fuel Stations to buy more FTL fuel, for immersion
2. Large version of FTL drive (larger efficiency coverage, still costs the same in fuel, higher cost part, requires more energy)
But as you said at the start, this is not typically an issue. I don't think this be a priority for a while. At least until we get a fleshed out single player campaign
