@thatPolarBear and I debugged the problem on Discord. It turns out that if your computer doesn't have any audio devices (which can happen if your speakers/headphones get unplugged) then you'll get an INCOMPATIBLE message when trying to join multiplayer games. Really.
This is a bug that will be fixed in the next update.
