I think it would be cool if a new part could be added: the cloaking device. This module (or part or whatever) adds the ability to cloak your ship, as long as you have enough to completely cover your whole ship (similar to FTL drives, but cloak only works at 100%).
Cloaking would make you almost completely invisible to enemy sensors. It would still be possible to be detected and engaged by enemy weapons.
While cloaked, shields can only be at lowest strength (one battery), and they would have to be refilled by the crew after de-cloaking.
Taking a hit to anything that isn't a shield completely disrupts the cloak and initiates a cooldown.
Firing weapons while cloaked would completely disrupt your cloak and would initiate a cooldown.
The cooldown makes it impossible to re-cloak for a certain amount of time (that depends on the size of ship and amount of devices; a large ship would take longer than a small ship, but having extra cloaking devices would speed up the cooldown).
The cloaking device would allow for stealth reconnaissance and surprise attacks against enemy forces.

I had a very similar idea
The "cloak efficiency" (which is identical to the FTL efficiency) would determine how close you can get to an enemy before he notices you. This could be counteracted by sensors.

It could be a weird combination of shields and FTL drives. the cloak efficiency determines how fast the module eats through energy, and your crew would have to feed the cloaking modules energy to keep the cloak active.
It kinda makes sense. If you have a huge ship, you need to have to spend more energy to keep the entire thing cloaked.

    I like the second idea, because it's very similar to the way FTL drives work. If you don't have enough devices to cover your whole ship, the ones you have are going to be working overtime to cover more area than they usually would.

      There was the suggestion for stealthy reactors and ships pick you up with heat so lots of armour would be needed and a stealthy reactor to not let off so much heat and a cooling system for it.
