Thank you, now I get it. So you have to set different Formation Orders first to up to 5 ships, and then assign the ships to a formation. The three standard formations use a scheme where it assigns positions outwards, filling the right wing first: #5#3#1#2#4. Formation Orders are also saved with the ship designs allowing you to make different versions of the same ship for different positions in the formation.
