Artships can inspire new competitive designs. A lot of my good ships were inspired by built-in "artships" which weren't implemented perfectly but could be used in interesting ways. I use Marauder knock-offs all the time, and got ideas from Twincruiser, Metalhopper, Avalanche, and some others.
I tried building a one-sided laser circler, but the thrust was all messed up, so it's gonna need more work.
