here ill just copy the thread I made on 4chan (they haven't responded)
so. I downloaded cosmoteer (a free game from here: https://cosmoteer.net/ ) works fine. then next day game says theres a new update, don't bother reading the patch notes. game says an error while downloading update. kinda skim through it then see it says I can "retry or ignore (not recommended)" so obv I don't do that and press abort. so now I cant run the game anymore so I uninstall and reinstall. this heres the problem it gives the error you see in the png right after attempting to create a tmp file. tmp file goes away after this error. plz help

If you haven't already, please try the following:

Restart your computer, and then...
Download and manually install Cosmoteer from the main page.

Do not use the in-game updater, and don't run the game between restarting your computer and reinstalling it.

My hypothesis is that the game was still running in the background when the installer tried to update it. (A bug that I believe has been fixed.)

so I read the bug fixes in 2.7 update it says that this problem is fixed. while technically that's true now when I go to download 2.8 (from the program) its downloads the whole update just find and asks me to close it. I do, and try to run it again but the installer launches again whilst im opening the game. im curious and want to help with bugs in the game so I hit install and this problem happens again. im fine since I know how to deal with it but its still a bug and other players may not know how to fix it.

Yeah I think my original hypothesis was wrong. The installer should refuse to run if Cosmoteer is still running, so I don't think that's it.

Maybe worth trying to install somewhere other than Program Files.
