Just as the first shots are fired, time seems to slow to a crawl, as if someone cranked down the speed setting to x1/400. Then a binary star system made of two red dwarf stars and no planets suddenly comes into existence. They come so suddenly that the rift that carried them breaks down under the change in energy and pressure combined, creating cracks in the space-time fabric in a pattern reminding one of a baseball getting stuck on the windshield of a car. The new stars don't seem to move and the cracks do not get wider or shorter.
"We figured that sooner or later there would be a war of epic proportions that would result in the destruction of one or more factions. Truth is, eventually all factions are going to either stop interaction with this dimension or disappear with it as it dies and cycles again. If you want to be part of a grander scheme of things and still fight for your ideals, the Collective has a proposition..."
"We are preparing for a 'system reset' as it were, but we have come into a problem: Some outcast Core-AI 'Rogues' that you may or may not know about have been able to adapt to becoming separated from the Collective and are actively planning against our ideals, our wishes and our forces. Some Core-AI still in the Collective think banishing them was a mistake and should be re-integrated into the Collective. Others think they should be deleted along with this old universe. We cannot come to a decision, and two big contenders have challenged each other to a... Duel of sorts."
"Formal duels in the Collective are drastically varied from what you perceive a duel to be. They are partially proxy-wars between two subcore-equivalent ships, however the Core-AI exert a great amount of power on boosting that Subcore's abilities, as well as making a rule-changing addition to the duel. One of them involves getting willing factions to participate in this particular duel, and it comes with incentive."
"Donate a fighting force to a side in this duel and we will guarantee that SOME part of your faction will carry over to this next iteration of the universe, no matter how pompous, foolish or disgraceful you are. "
After the message, however it is received, the star system disappears, along with whoever was talking, and speed turns to normal. The cracks have disappeared too.
