Problems uninstalling and reinstalling

I can't run the new version!

When I opened up the game, I was asked to download the new version (I'd just downloaded the previous version a few days prior). I agreed, but error messages kept on popping up, saying things like 'you do not have permission to modify this file' and things like that. After that, the game said it had finished downloading the new version. I attempted to open it, and an error message appeared (I didn't think to screenshot it, but it had a white x in a big red circle on it) and it wouldn't let me open the game.

After that, I looked in file explorer so I could delete everything and reinstall cosmoteer from scratch. However, once I had located the files, my laptop wouldn't let me delete them, saying things like 'you don't have permission- contact the administrator' and 'this file does not exist'.

I downloaded the game again off the cosmoteer website, but the same things happened. I then ran the cosmoteer uninstall program via the uninstall window in my laptop's settings. After that, I was given a message saying that all the files associated with cosmoteer had been erased.

Just as a precautionary measure, I went into file explorer and searched for cosmoteer and found that none of the files had been deleted. I reopened the uninstall window and repeated the process, attempting to uninstall and then checking in file explorer. Nothing had been deleted.

Then, I downloaded the game from the cosmoteer itch.io page, but the game files already existing on the computer interfered with the new game files in the same way.

I currently have the same issue, and assumed it was a Micro$oft problem. The uninstall does not completely remove all files and delete the folder, and the files cannot be deleted due to it being owned by the administrators group.

The funny thing is, I'm the administrator. I even tried deleting using the hidden administrator account.

I think it has something to do with this:

I get this every time from Windows Defender whenever I upgrade. I usually just take the ignore option but I feel this may cause the installation to elevate to a super account of some sort.

I just received an Email from the Micro$oft CS handling my issue. He offers a workaround that will allow you to manually delete the administrator account files that the uninstall cannot remove.

It involves disabling the UAC completely through REGEDIT.

Start up REGEDIT and go to this part of the registry tree:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/System

Once there, find the key Enable LUA and set to 0.

Next, reboot your computer. Go into File Explorer and you'll discover you can delete the Cosmoteer folder and all the contents inside.

Hmm, strange. The Cosmoteer installer/uninstaller itself runs as administrator.

It might also help installing the game into somewhere other than Program Files (since things in Program Files require admin access to modify).

Walt I solved the problem by restarting the laptop, enabling admin, attempting once more to delete the files (the restart seemed to have wiped them already? I couldn't find them in the usual places) and downloading the game into 'C:Program files\Cosmoteer2' instead of 'C:Program files\Cosmoteer'.
