I had this idea some time ago, but this is the first time I've put it down.
Combining these ideas together:
In combat repair tools

Boarding Parties

My Idea consists of two parts
- In-Combat Repair
- Boarding
Part One: In-Combat Repair
My idea for this consists of three necessary parts:
(1x1) Spacesuit and Jet pack storage
(1x3) Large Door
(2x2) Tool storage
The crew will put the Spacesuit and Jet pack on, then go to the tool storage. After they are equipped with everything necessary, they will go to the door. The door opens, and they jet out. Using the AI priority numbers, they will fly over to the part and start repairing it. Possible tool ideas include: Laser welder, foam gun (for sealing up cracks) and duct tape (for the windows).
Also, if the part is targeted by the enemy ships, the crew will fly away and start repairing another part or fly back into the mother ship. I think that each part should have a max crew amount so that you don't have 10 crew repairing the same part. I also think that if they get hit by bullets from enemy turrets, they should have some health.
Part two: Boarding
Remember the 1x3 Large door? It has double uses. An exit and entrance for crew that are repairing the ship and a primary place for enemies to board.
Again, there are parts necessary for this to work:
(2x2) Boarding weapons storage
(3x3) Weapons factory
(2x2) Ammo factory (unless the weapons are powered by energy)
(1x1) Bullet proof vest storage for crew ?
(1x2) Battering ram storage ?
(1x3) Boarding clamp (Attaches the boarding ship to the ship thats being boarded)
And of course, the door.
The crew arm themselves, and the boarding ship maneuvers to the closest Large Door. The clamps hold the ship in place, and the crew get the door open and invade the ship. The ship that is being boarded may try to hold back against the on-coming boarders, but if all goes well, the boarders get to the control rooms and take over the ship.
The ship is now yours to use.
However, if the boarders are overcome, the boarding ship detaches.
I think that the repair part is necessary so that there is an incentive for the player to place the Large Doors. Of course, it is possible that docking is used as the incentive instead of repairing, but at the moment, I think that this would be the easiest to implement.
There is only one problem I see. The weapons. Would they be firing or not?
