Colored decals should be possible as long as the decal layer is set to be white.
Just on a note I think about 4 layers will satisfy everyone's need. You got to remember it's possible to use the hull color, too. Difficult to arrange but 5 overall is possible this way.

Updated the mod with new 'D' Decals and wedge shadows
The hull patterns/camo gives a slightly darker shade in places, but if we could add an actual colour instead that would give some fun possibilities.
I just updated the mod, it adds nothing, it just does the compatibility thing now.
Pretty dull compared to the one I am making, Though this is a good alternative for now as it's not public yet.
