Sombreroman You should still be able to make joints/hinges using the blueprint mode as I mentioned. You just need to save the blueprint and then bring the ship in from the library.
I'll see if I can create an example ship blueprint.

Here's an example:
If you pause the game you can save/edit it. Once unpaused the game will consider each part a separate ship but they are still linked by the hinging mechanism so the front can pull the rest. This example behaves sort of like a snake.
Note: This particular hinging mechanism can some times fly apart since I didn't test it much before posting it.
