If big ships are not compartmentalized, and they are big, that can cause slow downs. Because without compartmentalization, a crew from one far corner of the ship has to find a path to the other far corner of the ship, which causes the problem. And each crew member causes more slowdowns.
By compartmentalizing a small section, you limit the pathing each crew member needs to make to move.
