Walt Multiplayer would, at the very least, require all players to be "in" the same sector (planet area) at the same time.

Since in the next updates multiplayer will get a server list, if every server is a sector (like now it already kind of is in matches), the FTL jumps are "jumps" to other servers, on connect to the server you'd spawn a ship with the temporary ship information generated on disconnect from the previous server... Then every "disconnect" would be an FTL jump out of the sector and every connect would be an FTL jump into it? That way the game never deals with syncing FTL jumps to other sectors since a server is just 1 sector.
Over the temporary ships, on disconnect, save the ship (and its damage values etc) and send them to the next server like if you start a new match (as in current version) with a broken ship.
Might this be an easy solution?
The more dedicated servers the bigger the galaxy would get. Ofcourse this would mean some servers are modded and wont show up in the galaxy map if you dont have a modded game etc...
This solution would work great since the FTL jump would be the thing keeping you from fleeing all the time since it takes time to leave a server. This way players won't get annoyed when a ship instantly flees when hit.
If you don't have an FTL drive well then you'll have to fight some AI to gain credits for FTL... leaving the game would still be an option with a 10 second countdown, also to restrict players from fleeing...
BUT
As a last restriction, when joining a server, you'd have to select a ship, like now in match making, but the ship requires a FTL drive, otherwise you wont be able to select the ship and join the server. This way you'd be sure players already build a ship capable of having an FTL drive and probably some decent ship too this way there wont be this massive battle over killing that one AI for some credits, players can already battle eachother on joining their first server.
A great feature would be the current galaxy map, having amature, proffesional veteran markings on the multiplayer galaxy map, being dynamic, every server would count the total ship mass inside the server and depending on that it would put a status saying empty, amature, etc etc.
Okay thats all I could come up with, if anyone wants to change or add onto this please do.
