Crash on Startup

I used the in-game download feature to upgrade from 0.12.10 to 0.12.11, and now it crashes on startup, just after showing the little green progress bar. I've never used a mod and the "No Mods" and "Graphics Debug" modes also crash.

Okay, I still had the old Cosmoteer 0.12.10 Setup.exe so I ran it and it works.

It looks like your graphics drivers are from 2011, and old Intel drivers are notoriously buggy. Can you please try updating them?

Windows says "The best driver software for your device is already installed", "Windows has determined that the driver software for your device is up to date" when updating from device manager. Device Manager shows both "Intel(R) HD Graphics Family" and "NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M" and says both are up to date.

uninstalling and reinstalling 0.12.11
renaming My Games\Cosmoteer to Cosmoteer_

Ah, right, you have dual integrated-and-dedicated GPUs. In your settings.txt file, look for the line that says AdapterIndex = 0. Trying changing it to AdapterIndex = 1. It probably won't work, but it's worth a shot.

As I suspected. It might be worth poking around your driver settings to see if there's any way you can tell it to run Cosmoteer on the Nvidia GPU as opposed to the Intel GPU.

Anyway, I do believe I know what change I made that causes 0.12.11 to crash on startup for you and a few other people. Pretty sure the core issue is a driver bug, but I think I can work around it.

Oh, and it's also probably worth checking for updates from your computer manufacturer's website. They might have updates that Windows doesn't know about.

It's odd, I had no idea I had an NVIDIA chip that wasn't being used... but I have no idea how to activate it.

I tried downloading the "Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows" but the installer decided "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software." And the Intel Driver Update Utility doesn't suggest any updates.

I'm not sure that it's not being used. But apparently in some cases you have to tell the drivers to prefer to use the dedicated GPU instead of the integrated GPU. I have no idea whether your computer is like that.

On computers that have dual GPUs from two different manufactures (in your case, Intel and Nvidia), usually the computer manufacturer itself (like Dell, HP, or whoever made your laptop) provides a custom driver that automatically handles switching between the GPUs. So downloading a driver from Intel probably wouldn't work, since you need a custom driver straight from your computer manufacturer.

In case of Intel + Nvidia, you need to first install the Intel drivers and then the Nvidia drivers. If you try to install the Nvidia drivers first, it will tell you it needs to have the Intel drivers installed first.
