So I built my first diagonal ship and I'm interested to see what other people have come up with. I think diagonal designs have the potential to be extremely powerful since you can practically double the forward facing firepower on your ship. It's really tricky though not being able to use mirror mode, lots of copy and pasting... Anyways here's my design it's called the Star Crusher and costs around 4 mill. Maybe we can get a little diagonal ship tourney going on if any ones interested.

Cosmic_Horror I originally thought the same, the extra firepower should result in a more powerful ship. But in practice the guns aren't level for good engagement and it seems a lot harder to get good shield coverage. I dug out some of my old diagonal designs for you to fight:

Cosmic_Horror dang nice ships and Teg nice ships too and i would like to try and make my own form of diagonal ship

Teg Thanks for sharing! these designs have been fun to play with. I'm definitely starting to see the issues with diagonal designs. The cannons do have a hard time focusing fire and the A.I. doesn't always have the easiest time with these ships. I quickly re-arranged my design and got rid of the missiles because once your ships got through the inward facing cannons the other modules were completely exposed.
I thought having the cannons on a bit of a slope would help, and while it does seem work better with the slope, I think it needs to be even steeper and have heavy cannons on the ends to be the most effective. Your Rain Maker seems to be the the best functioning diagonal ship at the moment, it kicks ass. Against multiple smaller opponents I think diagonal ships might be worth it because of their wider span. Here's some screen pics from some battles.

Jabenyezaa Thank you, if you do end up making a diagonal design I'd love to see it. They're kinda weird but it's good to change things up once in a while.

Cosmic_Horror yea i agree its a unique kind of way to build the ships!

In terms of frontal fire power it seems pretty hard to beat two cannon walls at 90 degrees to each other.

    For instance this ship.

Not very creative but it is powerful in a front on battle.

It can also beats Tegs Rain Maker but it is a much closer battle.
It probably could go either way depending on the AI targeting.

The issue with diagonal designs is that the cannons don't have enough turning arc (I believe it is only 45 degrees). So if they are mounted facing outward they can't focus fire.

Lasers have much higher turn arc (at least 90 degrees) but their range is so short that they can't focus fire because they'll be out of range.

Really cool design. I like the rear "tail".

One trick with diagonals, though the AI doesn't handle it yet unless I've missed an update is that you can use the backs for missile launchers. They have just enough field of fire to come around. Unfortunately missiles are nigh-useless against most player designed ships so even if the AI doesn't point them backwards they fare poorly.

For artsy ships (Please ignore the paint jobs or lack thereof):

I found that missiles are the best with a design like this... this thing is not my best missile build but its easily the most interesting due to how it flys... Missiles really seem to be the best bet when doing a diag design.

Hello! i am new to the forums!

Btw, Teg your "big2" cube may be the best cube design i have ever encountered, it was a pain making a non-missile spam/run away build that could take it head on.

Atarlost Really cool designs. I like the space turtle. I agree the reason I built my diagonal ship in the first place was for missiles. Although on mine they're on the inside of the ship. Watching them all funnel out is really quite something.

      Jestes That thing looks sick!

      Here's mine 😛

Jestes holy freaking jeeze thats amazing and how long did that take to build?

XD thanks. I build it in around 4-5 hours.

The thrusters were by far the most time consuming. (3 hours lol it's insanely fast for a ship this size) But sadly the weapon Placements aren't the best because I suck at those 🙁

it might look like a heart buy it will only love destroying you!

on a side note, its one of my most effective builds at its credit cost range. my most recent bounty hunter playthrough i have two that have lasted into me taking on vanguard, and they actually do decent damage to those ships! i was amazed i could get that front end so effectively shielded. It can single highhandedly conquer veteran zones with smart targeting.

I call it my advanced prototype Frigate.

          2 months later

Atarlost Corect, your design is older, i downloaded picture as model and started to create my turle 9.10. and thank to you i find out that it has not been introducet officially, i forgot a bit 😃
