Hmm... The original intent for that feature was for people who wanted to use an external paint program to create a basic ship outline. It's probably not worth re-implementing features that paint programs have and will always be better at.
A basic warning when the image is too big, and maybe an automatic down-scale to fit in the box if necessary? Any more than that probably isn't worth doing.
