I think we need or could use some tools:

A reader tool which reads and displays the ship data. So you don't need to start up the game each time to look them and post the stats. No need to show the image if you use an image viewer like irfanview. Makes it simpler.
It would be nice to have a png image to ship image converter. A simple tool which takes a black & white image ( < 102x102 pixel check needed) and creates (corridor or 1x armor, structure, ) tiles per pixel.
Or add a fill bucked tool to the creation tools. This may need more effort & tool intelligence, though.

That'd be cool! One thing I've been thinking of doing is printing the ship's name, cost, and crew on top of the ship's PNG. Only problem with that is the cost/crew can become out-of-date whenever the game rules change. (But so can the actual appearance, for that matter, so probably not a big issue.)
So you want to make a ship silhouette in an image editor and then import that into the game as a starting point for a ship?
I like the idea of a fill tool. Shouldn't be too hard for 1x1 parts. I'll add that to my todo list.

If someone knows C# and wants to take on making tools for 1. or 2., I'd be happy to share the code used to read and write the .ship.png files.

Actually, filling was the main idea, but silhouette is a bonus. 😃 I was thinking of the tools to turn images into minecraft or SketchUp

Well, I haven't worked on the maps for a long time. Like the ships I've posted here the map is actually a 2D version of my decade old 3D models and Technical Manuals. Those are far more detailed. 😉 So without exaggerating I would say you've seen nothing yet.
