Admiral Howard J. Salen (Adm. S):
“Play the mission briefing.”
Shipboard Artificial Intelligence Unit (Nickname: Weaver):
“Yes sir, playing mission briefing, codename: ‘Renewed Hope’, immediately”
Mission Briefing:
“Five days ago, before the IDS Voyager was even constructed, an anomaly was discovered within the newly charted star system ‘Ventara Prime’. The system’s star is a red hypergiant named Hyper-Ventara, being orbited by two primal black holes of almost negligible size. They are speeding up the spin of the star and slowly consuming the material of the star, increasing it’s low life expectancy by about two percent due to the removal of material that would cause the star to collapse, meaning it will go supernova within a thousand years. Your mission is to study this effect and attempt to come up with a design to steal energy directly from stars without harming their life expectancy. You and your escort fleet should arrive at the system within 2 days upon leaving from Gelos Mal. Good luck, Voyager. Fleet Admiral Yema, Out.”
Weaver:
“Mission briefing complete.”
Admiral Salen Straightens his shoulders and presses a button, relaying the mission objective to the crew of the ship.
Adm. Salen:
“Jump to Hyperspace.”
Weaver:
“Yes sir, Engaging Hyperdrive.”
After a short time of charging, the ship Zips to hyperspace, beginning it’s long journey to Ventara Prime.
2 Days after jump to hyperspace
The ship and it’s escort fleet drops out of hyperspace with a woosh, being lit a bright red by the ultramassive star sitting ahead of them, arms of plasma and gas being slowly torn from the surface, while clouds of said gas and plasma hang around the star, as it’s massive size makes gravity extremely minimal at its surface, making losing matter an easy task. Circling the star are two almost undetectably small black holes, being the points where the 2 twirling spirals of ejected plasma and gas end up. Orbiting the star is only the far outer planets, including a gas giant, a dwarf planet, a rocky planet almost small enough to be considered a dwarf planet, and a massive gas giant, just verging on being a brown dwarf, but not quite massive enough. The rest of the farther inward planets have been completely eaten by the hypergiant star, lost in it’s glowing seas of matter. The ships immediately begin to scan the system, noting the orbital patterns of the black holes in order to avoid them at all costs. Setting up in the outer shell of the system, composed of comets and planetesimals, they begin mining and setting up orbital stations. The Voyager acts as the head of the operation, feeding and supplying everyone. 3 Days of construction pass and a basic orbital station has been set up to act as a hub for resource gathering, as well as a couple bases upon Ventara Minor, the system’s dwarf planet. It’s rocky and icy surface is perfect for harvesting ice for oxygen and minerals. The bases begin to grow some genetically modified plants, designed to grow in low gravity conditions, and already partially grown aboard the Voyager previously. As well as this, planetside operations begin over the next 2 days.
4 Days after jump to hyperspace
Mining operations in full effect
The voyager begins to do deep scans of Hyper-Ventara, noting strange high-energy readings within the plasma of the star. Plans are made to investigate one of these energy signatures at a later date if the black holes ever begin to pull one of them from the star
6 Days after jump to hyperspace
Prefab bases and other structures are fully constructed and ASWACS patrol the system, scanning for anomalies. A Listening post is set up on Ventara I underground, listening in on the signals and radiation emitted by the star itself. They continue to note the continuous anomalies of high energy within the star. A Seer-Class Recon ship zips past the plasma arms of the star arching out and notices one of the anomalies, it hits full speed and grabs the anomaly with a short external arm before returning to the Voyager with outer hull damage from the plasma. The Large crystal brought back seems to hold vast amounts of energy, far more than any normal battery seen by the ID. For testing they hook it up to a closed power circuit and run tests, connecting it to wires and trying to draw or add energy to it. Through testing they note that it can hold an immense power level, and easily gives that energy up, likely making for a perfect storage system for ship power. Meanwhile, study goes into observing the way the black holes drink up matter from the star.
10 Days after jump to hyperspace
A Small test device is constructed, using interdictor technology to create a gravity well, shakily drawing in very minimal amounts of material from the star’s surface, but shortly melting due to the extreme heat of the surface of the sun. The test is deemed a success and thought is put into how to keep the device from melting and to increase its range.
2 weeks after jump to hyperspace
Another test of the device is done, utilizing thermally resistant materials such as aerogel to protect it as it draws in power, only faltering due to running out of space for the plasma that it converts into energy, it returns to the ship and 80% of the plasma is converted into energy. Plans are drawn up for a larger space station that utilizes the technology, this will take quite some time…
2 weeks and 4 days AJH
The plans have been fully drawn and the framework to the station laid out.
Adm. Salen:
“Weaver, status report.”
Weaver:
“Tests have been complete, an automated station has been designed and the framework is being laid out to test this new technology on a larger scale. It will have barebones systems and mostly focus on drawing material from Hyper-Ventara. Construction is predicted to be done by the end of the galactic-standard week.
Adm. Salen:
“Good. We should have our results soon.”
