Allowing Players to Choose (Predetermined) Names for Control Points

While the current system does work very well, in Domination, it would be fun to be able to name control points! CP name options could be generated from a predetermined list and chosen by players, whether before the game starts and/or during the game. User-chosen names would add additional customization to Domination matches - each match would be even more unique and specifically tailored to the player.

bibletech55 it seems that you can already do this (client-side) through strings, however, the main issue with it is that it's a hassle to change it through a strings file and reload the game every time. It'd be nice to have textboxes for niche things like this

TBH I don't think this is worth the effort it would take to create an in-game UI for changing control point names, especially since you can already do it with mods.

FYI, if you run the game in developer mode, then any changes to string files will be reloaded automatically. (Not true of most .txt files; only applies to the string files.)

An external list can be misused to inject not only some unsavory name but also hate messages and such. Maybe it's better to have the community submit name lists that the game could chose and load from the Cosmoteer server. Either way Walt could be liable in both cases. It wouldn't be an issue for single player mode.

Lafiel I agree and share those concerns of users choosing inappropriate names. If the players can only choose a name from an available list of appropriate names, the risk of liability is far greatly reduced - even more so if Cosmoteer clients only display registered names from their own name-list (so other clients can't project modified names for another client to display).

TBH, Cosmoteer takes this risk every day with ship names and ship hulls that aren't even slightly regulated.

Walt It’s easier for experienced Cosmoteer players to change string files, but it’d be a nice enriching feature for new players especially. The current system does work well, but my thought is that CPs would be more individualized and some aspect of lore can be communicated through player-chosen names. Either way works though! 🙂
