Is boarding possible within the current mechanics? I see talk of it quite a bit but it's unconfirmed if someone actually got it to "work"..
It is not possible. It will be possible in the 1.0 release. Please consult the trello.

Definitely not if by 1.0 you mean the Early Access launch. Hopefully it will come eventually, but no promises other than I want to do it.
