This is the 3rd time or so I'm suggesting this but this time there's new argument.
So far the reason was mostly related to minimum safety distance for explosive ordnance and the like.
For vanilla, range overlapping is a strong reason not to add more diverse weapons. With the minimum range similar weapon types can be used along each other as complementary weapons without turning their particular use to OP-ness.

I would like to ask this feature for weapons and shots separately so each one respectively can be made universal. This would allow weapons to fire different types of shots and shots to be shared.

one question, what would happen to the shot hitting something closer than the minimum range?
that could happen if the weapon is auto firing, or if it's targeting a ship and another intercept (accidentally or not) the shot

kwhwwymwn A weapon with minimum range will not fire. A shot with minimum range will do no damage or very little and probably (always) impart an impulse.
In case it's not clear these are mostly warhead type of ammo.

Maybe this can open up for time set cannon shells, like with missiles where you can choose between the different types, here you can chose between a pre-set group of timers. So you can have cannons specialized in different ranges. And agree that any ship hit within the minimum range should just have less damage done

Right now only the nuke has a wide enough splash radius for it to even matter, but even if more explosive weapons were added (inluding the ones that you or someone else will add to some mod), I don't really see a problem with the game punishing players for using them recklessly and rewarding those that use control groups and hold fire.

Of course having the function there so AI ships won't use such weapons stupidly makes sense to me and should probably be added, I just don't think any of the weapons currently in vanilla should have a minimum range. Even firing a nuke point blank should be an option.

And for modded weapons, you would know better than I do, but couldn't you just have a projectile replace itself if you wanted it to be "armed" a second or so after being fired? Make it spawn another projectile with same location and velocity as a death effect.

This makes sense for missiles and possibly ions as well. The transmitters from my EW suggestion could probably also have a minimum range.

I don't see why cannons or lasers need to stop firing though.
