PvtPirate Well, 1x1 sprites are easier to create so it's not as much as a problem as large parts. But it limits the amount of details you can have etc. In this case it's purely a graphical design problem. Anyhow, I can upgrade the mini_fusion_reactor for this so it can be done very fast. 😃
There are a few problems with modular parts. Since the game doesn't support dynamic cost I would have to set cost higher so the equilibrium with vanilla would be met at about 5x5 size from there on it would be more cost efficient.
Diagonal walls didn't and still don't work so it would be more of a graphical feature.
Anyhow, I'll have modular or compound engineering parts which will merge with modular machinery like modular reactors, etc. Not sure yet about all the types of machinery. FTL is still not worth it because it can't be buffed yet. So FTL would just be a visual thing. In any case, they will require engineering control consoles to work. And the requirement will dynamically scale up. I'm not sure yet if the idea will work cause it's complicated and the underlying mechanic has been bugged for years.
