History
A human colony was stablished in the Leptis star system around 200 years ago. It is primarily based on Leptis II, a once desertified planet that went through a massive terraforming effort to become a lush paradise, covered in ornamental planned forests operated by AI insect drones, as well as massive high tech megacities. Roughly 1.3 billion people live on the planet. The planetary governing body of Leptis II is the Corporate Consensus, a massive conglomerate of over 5.000 LLC companies ranging all sorts of industry and business.
Resources for the planets industry and overall maintenance come from the massive asteroid ring that orbits Leptis III, a red gas giant roughly the size of Jupiter. A mining base was stablished on the asteroid ring even before Leptis II was colonized, as most of the water used in terraforming was taken from there. The Corporate Consensus' industry is heavily reliant on gold, silver, iron and titanium mined in the asteroid ring.

One of the thousands of modules on the asteroid ring. Many of them are connected by corridors.
Around 40 million people, most of them engineers, technicians and miners, but also their families and other civilian workers (scientists, physicians, teachers, farmers and traders) live and work on 2.088 modules built within and around the asteroids. Thanks to hydroponic gardens and other facilities, the base is autonomous in relation to the Corporate Consensus for food and medicine, except for those produce from species of plants now native to Leptis II that were genetically modified so that they don't produce seeds naturally, forcing the miners to purchase (or steal) them from the Corporate Consensus.
About one year ago from present time, a rebellion in the asteroid rings declared its independence from the Corporate Consensus, leading to the establishment of the Free Miners Union after they were able to defeat CC's armada, leaving the planet virtually without any space force of their own. During the five year armed conflict prior to the FMU foundation, the miners used powerful work ships repurposed for battle and strategic resource hoarding to achieve victory. The two factions sharing the Leptis star system are currently in a stalemate, as the miners are unable and unwilling to take over Leptis II.
New events in their conflict, with the interference from outside factions, are currently unfolding.
Government
The FMU is a representative republic, divided in two powers: the General Comissariat and the Deputy Chamber. The GC is the executive power, responsible for running the economy, defense, external affairs and the transient justice system. The Deputy Chamber is the legislative power, in charge of crafting the Constitution of the newly formed faction, a proccess still ongoing.
There's no permanent judiciary structure, as courts are composed of randomly selected citizens any time a crime is reported to the General Comissariat. There's also no centralized police force, as all security matters are addressed by the former guerrilla militias formed during the independence war, a set of paramilitary groups that also act as the Union's current military.
Economy
All economic activity on the FMU is planned and controlled by the Economy ministry of the General Comissariat. Mining of gold, silver, iron, saltpeter, titanium, platinum, plutonium, uranium, thorium and beryllium corresponds to most of the miners work. The FMU also contains several highly specialized industries focused on building and repairing spacecraft, refining ore and forging complex alloys, among other activities.
Since before the revolution, a sprawling black market of alcoholic beverages has also been a major economic activity on the habitats, although completely uncharted and unregulated.
Ships
Magdrill

A workship that uses tractor beams to attach itself to asteroids and cut through them with a focused laser beam. During the revolution, they were repurposed to do the same against enemy ships. The tractor beam can also be reversed to push away ships, rocks, shrapnel, bombs and other projectiles at moderate speeds.
Magdrill-2

A bigger, meaner version of the Magdrill.
Hollow Asteroids

Smaller pieces of rock too small for building habitats, instead turned into battle stations whose surface is almost completely covered with antibattery guns. A slow moving unit strategically positioned around the habitats for self-defense against missiles.
Particle Accelerator Lab

A one of a kind mobile science station designed by the Corporate Consensus to explore unusual matter found at Leptis IV, another gas giant on the system. During the revolution, the scientific facility was retrofitted to also serve as a EM cannon, shooting bullets at near the speed of light, causing havoc on enemy lines.
Nuclear Lab

Stationary science labs dedicated to researching multipurpose applications to atomic elements. During the revolution, they were largely retrofitted into nuke factories and lauching pads.
Modular Command Center

Besides the main command center on Habitat-1, those mobile units carry commanding officers and assemble in a mobile fragmented array of coordinating stations for the FMU's fleet. They are also rigged with massive ejectable structures filled with running energy reactors that can be used to self destruct or be launched in space and moved around by magdrills before being detonated near enemy ships, causing massive damage.
