BattleCruiserCommander Half a dozen sizeable FTL signatures appear on the horizon. Captain George's reinforcement's had arrived. The pirate vessels weren't ordinary vessels either, they consisted of retrofitted sisters of the normal frigates, equiped with weapons designed to burn through hulls as fast as they burn through their own power supplies. They're fast, hard but ultimately only last a few minutes tops.
Sparks flew from each vessel as their shields burnt red with power and each gun battery cranked into a forwardly position. The ships slid into position forming a V.
"This is Captain George of the Pirate Lord Gibber. You and your ship are to be destroyed."
George's ship raises a blood red flag, a touch of class from an era of ancient times, but one of which signified no quarters. A blood red flag meant your decks will be awash with blood. They intended to leave no survivors.
The frigates sparked to life and jolted forward with like a bull. The formation tore it's way across the space, but not without challenge.
The anti aircraft guns (which makes no sense... it's space... there is no air...) swung towards the formation, and began chattering away. The formation broke up in thirds, each third diving towards a different ship. The burning red shields loudly warped and waved as each rouge shell was soaked up by it's matrix, and even more loudly their reactors burned away making power to fuel the hungry beasts.
As the frigates passed over the ships, they diverted fire towards the FTL drives. Their hopes were that if they disable the FTL drives, they'd buy themselves more time. Shell after shell after shell was crammed into a pirate cannon and sent careening into the hull of the large ships.
But their hull was too thick.
Each shell was laughably absorbed by the ship. Pepering it's hull. The anti air fire was intense. Each frigate was edging towards failure.
Suddenly a loud crash rang out as a frigates reactor blew. Fire and smoke burst out of the location, and what remained of the frigate flew free of the battle. Screams rang out over the comms. The fight was dragging on to long, the ships were going to escape.
Another frigate broke off from the rest. It's reactor was visibly melting, and a strange smoke wafted off of it. The pilot decided to spare their own crew to not meet the same fate as the one before it. It made it's way outside the battle zone, before quietly jumping to a safer location to recoup.
Then George noticed something. The FTL drives were connected to an exhast plume, billowing smoke from them. They were doing it wrong. George grabbed the mic and spoke loud and clear:
"The exhast! Divert fire to the exhast!"
There was a short silence before each ship rearranged themselves, instead of flying over the ship, flying behind it. Pilots found surprisingly effective blind spots, and advantaged themselves by firing even more shells. Now no longer blistering the hull, each one seemed able to penetrate deep inside the ship, sometime fire bellowing out the holes made.
(Leaving this here in the event you wanted something in particular to happen. I don't want to derail anything you had in mind)
