So, manned fighters would obviously move crew from your ship to the fighter, meaning you can only have so many fighters, drones would negate that by doing the obvious, not needing crew.
Drones would also be able to be more compact, No crew no need for a cockpit, this also means that if you lose a drone, it isn't the end of the world, you only lose money, as opposed to crew, this can also allow for much higher numbers when deploying, because again, unmanned, i feel there should be a downside to using drones, balance them out, maybe have them detonate when the core takes a hit, damaging anything around them (this is also what i want to see with big ships self destruct) if you arent sold with the idea, than here are a few other things drones could do
- Repair (Like a repair drone)
- Act as a turret
- Probe (If scanning becomes a thing)
- Kamikaze (Suicide drone, waste of money though)
- Shuttle crew around (Drone shuttles, no pilot, but crew capacity)
