So this idea revolves around improvements to the scanner room, by adding in special capacities for scanner rooms which can be independently buffed via external equipment. Scanner rooms will have a few capacities which are buffable, namely:
Detection Range
The detection range of a scanner room is the absolute distance before ships are completely invisible, they will not show on the minimap at all, not even as blips. Once a ship is below the detection range, it's position will be shown as a blip on the minimap and in the play space, but will otherwise not reveal any other details, including what their alligence is.
Identification Range
The scanner's identification range is how far away it will be able to recognise a ship's signature. Ships within this range will display their bearing, name, rewards and alligence.
Visibility Range
The visibility range represents the capacity for scanners to reveal the fog of war, as is their current functionality. When a ship is visible, they can be seen by the player, and most of their stats can be viewed. However, their internals are not visible.
Inspection Range
The inspection range represents the capacity for the scanner to reveal specific details about a ship, such as the health of certain parts, their firing state, ammo storage, and it will also allow the viewing of the ship's internals. The inspection range is the most detailed capacity of the scanner room.
Although scanner ranges can be larger than their former capacity, the capacity will not be active until all former ranges are met by itself or any other scanners.
That makes no sense, so I'll explain it. If a scanner room has a detection range of 100 but an identification range of 200, it won't be able to identify a ship until it is in the detection range, despite the fact that the identification range is higher. However, if another scanner room is added with a detection range of 300, then now the original scanner room can identify targets up to it's the full 200 units due to there being a detection range of 300 provided by the new scanner.
